Mindbody techniques have demonstrable benefits for health and human performance. One of the most important contributions has been the incorporation of relaxation/meditation methods into the treatment of chronic pain.
Although our understanding of pain remains incomplete, there is an emerging view that chronic pain is a multi-factorial phenomenon of human experience comprised of sensory, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. It follows therefore, that the treatment of pain must address its different dimensions for optimum outcome. In fact, the last 25 years of clinical research has shown clearly the improved benefits of combined treatments directed at multiple factors.
In keeping with the above we are pleased to present OHIP-funded group therary sessions that specifically address physical, cognitive and emotional factors. Thegoal of these sessions is to increase functional capacity and improve coping skills in chronic pain patients. Group members will be formally trained in relaxation/meditation techniques that stress awareness of one’s own thoughts and feelings. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to view one’s chronic pain in a clear and realistic fashion. These methods originate with ancient meditation practices and are described as cognitive techniques in the chronic pain literature. Efficacy has been well demonstrated.
This training will be complimented by a gentle system of exercise that focuses on appropriate biomechanics. Emphasis will be placed on combining mental imagery with postural training and movement. The purpose of exercise in the management of chronic pain is to maintain and improve physical performance. The goal of this section is to optimize the ability to perform daily activities through improved awareness ad physical fitness.
The structure of the group is an open one. New members can join any time and there are no attendance requirements. Participation in the group is open to all individuals regardless of the nature of their pain provided they can walk with minimal or no support and stand unaided. The maximum cardiovascular demand placed on participants is equivalent to a brisk walk.
Jan Carstoniu, MD, FRCPC, who specializes on pain management leads the group. He is partnered with Eric Reynolds, founder and director of Mindbody Training. Mr. Reynolds brings a deep fund of knowledge about meditation practice to these sessions. These two facilitators have more than 50 years of combined experience with the material being presented to the group.
